Add seven school-identity fields to the detail header (both primary and
secondary views): age range, religious character, nursery and sixth-form
indicators as chips; telephone (tel: link), county and parliamentary
constituency as header details. religious_denomination, age_range and
has_sixth_form were already served; telephone, nursery_provision, county
and parliamentary_constituency are newly wired through the marts query
(with a NULL fallback for un-rebuilt marts, mirroring has_sixth_form) and
the school_info API response.
Remove three UI sections the backend never populated (always null): Year 1
Phonics, the SEN "types of additional needs" breakdown, and the average
class-size card — along with their now-dead props, route plumbing, and the
SenDetail/Phonics types + class_size_avg field.
Extend the e2e detail journey to assert the Phonics section is gone and the
new header fields render when the record carries them.

Special schools, PRUs and alternative provision teach pupils with SEND who
sit the same KS2/KS4 assessments but very few reach the mainstream "expected
standard". Their headline attainment is therefore ~0% (or a very low
Attainment 8), and the site was comparing that to the England average and
painting it red — e.g. Greenmead School (a community special school) rendered
as "0.0% — −62 pts below England average" with three 0% red SATs bars. That
portrays a special school as catastrophically failing against a benchmark
that doesn't fit it.
Add a shared `isSpecialSchool()` helper (detects every DfE special-school
establishment type — all contain "special" — plus PRUs / alternative
provision) and drop the mainstream England comparison + "below" framing for
these schools across every surface:
- Detail (primary + secondary): a plain-English context note explaining the
school is special and why the comparison isn't shown; England-average delta
chips, "England avg" hints, the SATs national markers, the Attainment-8
"vs national" bar and the trend chart's England overlay are all suppressed.
An all-zero placeholder SATs row hides the (empty) subject bar chart and the
"why is combined lower" bridge.
- Rankings / search rows (primary + secondary): the mainstream RWM / Attainment
8 stat shows "—" with no "vs national" delta, instead of "0% · −62 vs
national".
- Compare: special schools' attainment values are dropped (no misleading dot
at 0% / no "Below England average" chip); progress banding, which IS a fair
measure for special schools, is kept.
Belt-and-braces zero-guard: a whole-row zero attainment (special or a
suppressed cohort) is also treated as not-comparable, while a legitimate
single 0 (e.g. 0% exceeding at a mainstream school) stays comparable.
Tests: new isSpecialSchool unit tests (every DfE special type matched, no
mainstream false positives); an e2e journey asserts Greenmead shows the
special-school note and no England-average comparison. tsc clean; 108/108 unit.

Batch A of applying compare-screen learnings to the detail page (points 2-3):
- Point 2: the legacy OEIF sub-judgement grid rendered any non-null value
via OFSTED_LABELS[value], so Ofsted's sentinel code 9 ('not applicable')
leaked as an undefined label, and the sixth-form judgement was dropped
entirely. New shared ofstedLegacyAreas() helper returns only real grades
(1-4) and includes Sixth Form provision. Both detail views + the
all-same-grade check use it.
- Point 3: the OEIF disclaimer always claimed 'Ofsted no longer makes an
overall judgement' even when showing a carried-forward grade. It's now
grade_source-aware and labels carried-forward grades as such, matching
the compare screen.

Review fixes on the list/map report-card PR:
- e2e precondition now hard-asserts ofsted_rc_date instead of test.skip, so
the backend dropping the field fails loudly (that's the regression under
test), not silently skips.
- Use page_size=5 (the real backend param); per_page was ignored and fell
back to the default page size.
- Update buildOfstedListBadge docstring to describe the ofsted_rc_date-based,
report-card-wins-first detection instead of the removed framework check.

The search-result cards and map pins keyed report-card detection off
ofsted_framework === 'ReportCard', but the API sets ofsted_framework to the
raw event grouping ('Schools - S5'); worse, ofsted_grade (the carried-forward
legacy grade) was checked first and won. So report-card schools were badged
by their old grade — Barclay's pin/card read 'Outstanding · 2021' instead of
'Report Card · 2026'. Same root cause as the detail-page fix, different
surface.
Expose ofsted_rc_date on the list serialization (the report-card inspection
date, non-null only for report cards) and make both badge builders treat a
present rc-date as winning over any grade, using its year. Removes the dead
framework === 'ReportCard' branches.

(admissionsForPhase) — an all-through school's Year 7 round no longer
masquerades as Reception odds beside pure primaries; honest per-cell and
section fallbacks name the round (Reception / Year 7).
M2: Ofsted sentinel codes (9 = not applicable) never render as judgement
chips, and the sixth-form judgement — previously dropped — now renders
for schools that have one.
M3: 'What this means' is phase- and type-aware: selective schools get
entrance-test framing, secondary faith schools a faith-criteria note, and
the primaries' distance template never appears on the secondary tab

The grid sections (At a glance, Ofsted, Getting a place, Who goes there)
collapsed generically on mobile — grey label pills, full names wrapping
to 3 lines, no dots — making the page ~2x the mockup's height and
'significantly different' from the mobile design.
Each measure is now wrapped in a <Measure> that is display:contents on
desktop (so the label + cells still flow into the shared aligned grid,
unchanged) and a white card on mobile with compact [dot][short name]
[value] rows — matching the mobile mockup. The sticky school bar becomes
scrollable short-name pills on mobile too. Adds a shortName() util.
Desktop layout is unchanged (display:contents dissolves the wrapper).
Validated the card mechanism and real content shapes (report-card cell,
badges, %+chip rows) via static previews at both widths.

Removes the 'What Parents Say' section and all supporting elements:
Frontend:
- Drop the OfstedParentView type, the parent_view field, the survey
section and the 'X% would recommend' callouts in the primary and
secondary detail views, the Parents nav item, and the parent-view CSS.
Backend:
- Remove the FactParentView model, its loading in data_loader, and
parent_view from the school-details API response.
- Bump SCHEMA_VERSION to 6 and add an idempotent drop step
(DROP TABLE IF EXISTS marts.fact_parent_view) to the CLI migration;
add scripts/sql/drop_fact_parent_view.sql to apply directly to the
dbt-owned marts DBs on staging and prod.
Pipeline:
- Delete the stg_parent_view + fact_parent_view dbt models and their
source/schema entries, the tap-uk-parent-view Meltano extractor, and
the monthly Parent View DAG; drop it from the Dockerfile and the
staging bootstrap docs.

The compare chart squashed clustered schools into a thin band (y pinned
0-100) under an in-chart title + per-school legend that ate ~40% of a
300px card, leaving converging lines indistinguishable on phones.
- Auto-fit the y-axis to the data on all viewports (computeYBounds in
lib/utils: padded + min-span for percentages, symmetric around 0 for
progress, fitted for scores; negative pct-named trend metrics are not
zero-clamped).
- Distinct point style per school (circle/triangle/rect/rectRot/star)
as secondary encoding for convergence and colour-blindness.
- Mobile: drop in-chart title/legend/axis titles; add a chip row (colour
dot + name) that doubles as tap-to-focus — highlights one school's
line and dims the rest. Chart card 300px -> 340px, nearly all plot.
- Fix a latent colour mismatch: datasets were built from Object.entries
whose integer-like URN keys enumerate in ascending numeric order,
desyncing line colours from card colours; the chart now receives the
ordered school list.
- Union years across schools instead of taking the first school's.
- Extract PerformanceChart's matchMedia pattern into hooks/useIsMobile.
Unit tests for metricKind/computeYBounds; e2e journey covers the mobile

A school inspected under the OEIF framework after September 2024 has an
inspection on record (ofsted_date set) but no overall_effectiveness grade,
since Ofsted no longer issues an overall judgement. buildOfstedListBadge
had no branch for this and fell through to "Not yet inspected", while the
detail page's hero chip correctly reported it as inspected — so the same
school read two contradictory ways.
Add an "Inspected · YYYY" branch that fires when an inspection is on record
(date or framework present) but no grade and not a Report Card, mirroring
the hero chip's fallback. Genuinely un-inspected schools (all Ofsted fields
null) still show "Not yet inspected". Add an .ofstedInspected badge style
(neutral slate) distinct from the grey pending state, and cover both cases
with tests.

The school detail page only showed the latest admissions year. We store
every year, which is more decision-relevant for parents (the trend and its
consistency matter more than a single noisy year).
Backend now returns the full admissions_history (oldest first) alongside the
existing latest-year object. The primary SchoolDetailView gains a header
toggle ("This year | N-year trend") that swaps the Q&A for an SVG sparkline
of the first-choice offer rate. The toggle only appears when >=2 years carry
an offer rate; otherwise it falls back to the single-year card. Both views
share one CSS-grid cell so switching causes no layout shift.

Upgrades the existing "Pupils" stat to include a compact split bar and
percentage hint for mixed schools (single-sex schools already carry a
"Boys's/Girls's school" badge, so the split would be redundant).
Wires fact_pupil_characteristics into the API: new SQLAlchemy model and
a real census block in /api/schools/{urn} replacing the prior null stub.
On the primary detail page the inline "Pupils: 241" text is replaced by
a richer block (display number + bar + "52% girls · 48% boys"). On the
secondary detail page the existing "Total pupils" hero stat card grows
the bar and hint beneath the number. Both fall back to the previous

P1 (backend/data_loader.py): Add load_latest_school_data() which pre-computes
the one-row-per-school latest-year snapshot (groupby, prev-year trend merge)
once at startup instead of on every /api/schools request. get_schools route
now starts from the cached snapshot rather than rebuilding it.
S3 (backend/app.py): Wrap synchronous geocode_single_postcode() call in
asyncio.to_thread() so postcode lookups no longer block the uvicorn event
loop. Admin reload endpoint also uses to_thread for both cache primes.
P2 (nextjs-app/components/HomeView.tsx): Add mapParamsRef guard so switching
back to map view does not re-fetch 500 schools when search params haven't
changed. Reset ref on new searches so fresh data is always fetched.
P3 (nextjs-app/lib/chartSetup.ts): Extract Chart.js registration into a
shared side-effect module. ComparisonChart and PerformanceChart now import

The staging model aliased EES's total_number_places_offered column as
published_admission_number, but PAN is the school's published capacity
(not exposed by EES at school level) — what we actually have is the
count of places offered in a given admissions round. The misnomer
propagated to the mart, SQLAlchemy model, API response, TS types, and
UI copy ("places per year", "(PAN)").
Rename end-to-end and fix the UI labels:
- "29 places for 42 first-choice applications"
→ "29 places offered for 42 first-choice applications"
- "Reception/Year 7 places per year"
→ "Reception/Year 7 places offered"
- drop the misleading "(PAN)" suffix in the secondary view
Also add a comment in stg_ees_admissions clarifying this is the number
of places offered, not PAN. Requires dbt to rebuild fact_admissions

Previously the dashed reference line was a flat horizontal at the latest
year's national average across all historical data, implying the national
figure was constant. Now the backend returns per-year averages in `by_year`
and the chart maps each data year to its own national average, so the
reference line correctly reflects how the national picture changed over time
(including COVID recovery dip/recovery).

existing `year`/`primary`/`secondary` latest-year snapshot

The staging model was mapping EES column ``proportion_1stprefs_v_totaloffers``
straight onto ``first_preference_offer_pct``. That raw column is not a
percentage — it is a ratio of first-preference applications to total offers
(an oversubscription indicator, >1 means oversubscribed), so OLQH rendered
as "1%" when the true first-choice success rate is 27/42 = 64%.
The frontend display code is not at fault and is not patched here —
data-quality issues must be fixed at the source.
- stg_ees_admissions: compute ``first_preference_offer_pct`` as
``100 * number_1st_preference_offers / times_put_as_1st_preference`` —
of families who listed this school first, the % that received an offer
(0–100). Guard against divide-by-zero.
- stg_ees_admissions: expose the legitimate EES ratio as the new column
``oversubscription_ratio`` (1st-preference applications per place) for
future use, clearly named.
- fact_admissions, FactAdmissions model, data_loader: propagate the new
``oversubscription_ratio`` column.
- SchoolAdmissions type: document both columns inline.
- buildSchoolSummary: reword the oversubscription clause so it reads
sensibly across the whole 0–100 range (no more "just 64%").
- Hero chip subtitle: clearer phrasing "X% of first-choice applicants
offered a place".
Requires a dbt run of stg_ees_admissions and fact_admissions on deploy
so the new column materialises.

The API returns ``framework`` as the literal string "NULL" for older OEIF
inspections (it comes from the upstream ``event_type_grouping`` column),
not real null. The original render path checks ``=== 'ReportCard'`` and
correctly treats anything else as OEIF — but buildOfstedHeroChip inverted
that and treated anything not exactly equal to ``'OEIF'`` as Report Card,
so OLQH (inspected Nov 2023, Outstanding) was being labelled as a Report
Card school in the hero strip and the at-a-glance tile.
- Invert the helper: only branch into Report Card when framework is
explicitly ``'ReportCard'``; treat OEIF / null / "NULL" / anything else
as OEIF, and require ``overall_effectiveness`` to render the grade word.
- Replace the toneClass field (which reused .ofstedGrade{N} / .rcGrade{N}
badge classes and dragged in their backgrounds) with a clean tone enum
``teal | green | gold | coral | neutral``. The serif Ofsted heroStat
picked up the badge background and rendered as a green box around
"Report Card" — gone now.
- Hero chip backgrounds use color-mix() against the tone variable so all
five tones share one rule.

formatAcademicYear now handles both 4-digit (2023→2023/24) and 6-digit
EES codes (202526→2025/26). Applied to all year displays: SATs, phonics,
admissions, finances, and the yearly results table.

Ofsted replaced single overall grades with Report Cards from Nov 2025.
Both systems are retained during the transition period.
- DB: new framework + 9 RC columns on ofsted_inspections (schema v4)
- Integrator: auto-detect OEIF vs Report Card from CSV column headers;
parse 5-level RC grades and safeguarding met/not-met
- API: expose all new fields in the ofsted response dict
- Frontend: branch on framework='ReportCard' to show safeguarding badge
+ 8-category grid; fall back to legacy OEIF layout otherwise;
always show inspection date in both layouts
- CSS: rcGrade1–5 and safeguardingMet/NotMet classes

Adds a full data integration pipeline for enriching school profiles with
supplementary data from Ofsted, GIAS, EES, IDACI, and FBIT.
Backend:
- Bump SCHEMA_VERSION to 3; add 8 new DB tables (ofsted_inspections,
ofsted_parent_view, school_census, admissions, sen_detail, phonics,
school_deprivation, school_finance) plus GIAS columns on schools
- Expose all supplementary data via GET /api/schools/{urn}
- Enrich school list responses with ofsted_grade + ofsted_date
Integrator (new service):
- FastAPI HTTP microservice; Kestra calls POST /run/{source}
- 9 source modules: ofsted, gias, parent_view, census, admissions,
sen_detail, phonics, idaci, finance
- 9 Kestra flow YAMLs with scheduled triggers and 3× retry
Frontend:
- SchoolRow: colour-coded Ofsted badge (Outstanding/Good/RI/Inadequate)

Replace the school card grid with a scannable row list that shows 3x more
results per screen. Each row shows: school name + R,W&M % with trend,
area/type meta, and reading/writing/maths progress scores with plain-English
band labels (e.g. "above average") instead of raw numbers.
Add lib/metrics.ts as a single source of truth for plain-language metric
explanations and the progressBand() helper. Map view toggle is unchanged.

Implemented split-view map layout for postcode searches:
- List/Map toggle appears when doing location search
- Map view shows interactive map with school markers on left
- Compact school list on right with distance badges, stats, actions
- Mobile responsive: stacks vertically with map on top
- Updated School type to include distance and total_pupils fields

- ComparisonView now uses fetchComparison from lib/api
- SchoolSearchModal now uses fetchSchools from lib/api
- Fixed bug in fetcher function that incorrectly sliced URLs
(url.slice(4) was removing '/com' from '/compare')
This fixes the malformed URL issue where '/api/compare' became '/apipare'.

1. Show empty state by default on home page
- Don't fetch or display schools until user searches
- Show helpful message prompting users to search
- Only fetch schools when search params are present
2. Change distance search to miles
- Display 0.5, 1, and 2 mile options instead of km
- Convert miles to km when sending to API (backend expects km)
- Convert km back to miles for display in location banner
- Maintains backend compatibility while improving UX
3. Fix metric labels in rankings dropdown
- Backend returns 'name' and 'type' fields
- Frontend expects 'label' and 'format' fields
- Added transformation in fetchMetrics to map fields
- Dropdown now shows proper labels like "RWM Combined %"
instead of technical codes like "rwm_expected_pct"

- Remove Object.values() conversion in compare and rankings pages
- Fix useMetrics hook to handle array instead of object
